Despite Johnnie Taylor's awesomerun of hit records, he remains somewhat of an enigma, perhaps themost underrated recording artist of all time. Never-the-less,over the past twenty-five years, this 48-year old singingsensation has been one of the most versatile and durablerecording artists of the era. With a career than embraced Gospel,Pop, Blues, Doo Wopp, Memphis Soul, and even Disco, Taylor hasproven he can handle any piece of music.Johnnie Harrison Taylor was born in Crawfordsville, Arkansas onMay 5, 1938, and reared in nearby West Memphis. Inspired equallyby gospel and blues (the legendary bluesman Junior Parker as hisneighbor), Taylor first recorded in the early fifties as part ofthe Five Echoes, a Doo-wopp group that had one release on theChance label in Chicago. However, he didn't receive any realrecognition of "SOMEWHERE TO LAY MY HEAD". Taylor'slead singing was strikingly close to Sam Cooke, so it wasn'tsurprising that he took Cooke's place in the Soul Stirrers in1957. During the next two years, Taylor would make a number offine recordings with that group, but he eventually left to pursuea short career as a preacher. In the interim, Sam Cooke had formed the Sar label as a sidelineto his own successful recording career. Ironically, Cookerecruited Taylor for the label with the intention of making him aPop / R&B attraction. Taylor would score with "ROMEWASN'T BUILT IN A DAY" in 1962, but his recording careerbogged down temporarily when Sar's operations were suspendedafter the tragic death of Sam Cooke. All that was remedied in 1966 when Taylor signed on with StaxRecords in Memphis, scoring with the bluesy "I HAD A DREAM"and "I'VE GOT TO LOVE SOMEBODY'S BABY". Two yearslater, Taylor's style easily adapted to the demands of modernSoul with his recording of "WHO'S MAKING LOVE", whichshot to the top of the R&B charts. The record sold more thantwo million singles, and established Taylor as one of thenation's premier Soul attractions. For the next seven years, Taylor's name rarely left thebestseller list. His first million seller was followed by suchclassics as "TAKE CARE OF YOUR HOMEWORK", "JODY'SGOT YOUR GIRL", "STEAL AWAY" and "CHEAPER TOKEEP HER" to name a few. It's true that much ink has beenspilled documenting the contributions Otis Redding, Booker T& The M.G.'s, Issac Hayes and Sam & Dave made to StaxRecords, but in fact, Johnnie Taylor was their all time bestselling recording artist. With the demise of Stax, Taylor moved over to Columbia, waxingthe mega-hit, "DISCO LADY", which was at the top ofeverybody's charts in 1975. Unfortunately, Columbia didn't fullyrecognize Taylor's talent, and they were content to mistakenlycast him as merely a Disco artist. Not surprisingly, his recordsales slipped. After leaving Columbia, he made a brief stop at Beverly GlenRecords in 1982, recording a reasonable album and climbing backinto the charts with the "WHAT ABOUT MY LOVE" single. But, as Taylor admits, at the time he was looking for a recordcompany that would work closely with him just as Stax once had.Taylor found that company, or rather they found him in 1984, whenhe joined Malaco Records. His initial Malaco album, "THIS ISYOUR NIGHT", was not only a well crafted piece of music, butsales wise, it was Taylor's biggest record in nearly a decade. The follow up "WALL TO WALL" proved to be just assatisfying, featuring some for the best material. Blues, SoulBallads, down home Funk.....it doesn't matter to Taylor. He cando it all, and this album proved it.
